Sailing Holidays in Greece: The Ionian Islands

Sailing holidays in the Ionian Islands are an inviting promise of adventure and fun for singles, couples, or families offered by Skipper Armatori, an opportunity to discover the magic of the Heptanese. This Greek archipelago, with its islands of Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and other small gems like Antipaxos, Meganisi, and Kastos, stands out for its history, culture, and surprising natural beauty. Rich in Italian influences, the architecture of the Ionian Islands tells stories of dominations and peoples who have crossed the Mediterranean. The region offers splendid beaches and turquoise waters, hiking trails and archaeological sites wrapped in myth, all in a vacation that is both a return to origins and an exploration of new lands. With Skipper Armatori, sailing holidays are perfect for everyone: singles, couples of all ages, groups of friends, and families can find their ideal boat, with rentals ranging from cabin charter to complete vessel charters, all equipped to ensure fun and relaxation for every type of group, combining the experience of the sea with the sharing of interests and the pleasure of sailing adventure.

In the boundless blue of the Ionian Sea, set like jewels in a crystalline sea, emerge the Ionian Islands, also called Heptanese, a Greek archipelago consisting of Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos, to which are added other small gems of adamantine beauty, including Antipaxos, Meganisi, and Kastos.

The centuries-long Venetian domination allowed these islands to escape the Ottoman Empire’s aims. The stratification of peoples and cultures during various evolutionary events still makes the Ionian region very distinct. Illustrious examples of Italian influences are present, especially in the flourishing artistic design of architectural structures and modeling for the main towns.

With a history dating back to the first evidence of civilization, the mythology of the heroic age, and the legendary verses of Homer, the Ionian Islands, the native homeland of Ulysses, are one of the most evocative sailing destinations in the entire eastern Mediterranean. A fascinating mix of splendid beaches, turquoise waters, hiking trails, and archaeological sites wrapped in the aura of myth will make your experience in Greece sensational. It is different from others but equally unique and attractive.

The Ionian Islands: The jewels of the Greek archipelago

Lefkada

The island of Lefkada is the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. The island combines crystal-clear sea and pristine beaches with the lush greenery of a large mountainous area.

There are many beaches to discover; unmissable is Porto Katsiki, with its sapphire-toned sea. In the south of the island, you can visit Vasiliki, a windy bay and an ideal place for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, and Sivota, a picturesque fishing village rich in local taverns where you can savour excellent fish dishes.

Ithaca

Universally known as the beloved homeland of Ulysses to which he returned after many years, what will attract you to Ithaca will no longer be the songs of the sirens but its real beauties, such as the endless bays, small beaches and inlets, picturesque villages like Kioni and Frikese, delightful little harbours that characterise the island with simplicity.

Kefalonia

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands: always calm and relaxed. The intoxicating scents, the sea’s colours, and the inhabitants’ warmth make Kefalonia one of the most popular stops on our sailing holidays in the Ionian Islands.

Kefalonia is home to one of Greece’s most beautiful beaches: Myrtos Beach, a crescent of white pebbles that plunges into a dreamy sea. Fiskardo, called the “Portofino” of Kefalonia for its elegant soul, is the only village that has preserved stunning Venetian buildings. Together with the different shades of blue of the sea, it will give you the feeling of living in a painting.

Among the many locations, Sami stands out for its port village in a deep inlet with a small white sand beach. Near Sami, a magical place is the Melissani Cave, where the sun’s rays filter through the partially collapsed vault and reflect on the underground lake, creating iridescent colours.

Zakynthos

The Island of Zakynthos is known especially for Navagio Beach, the iconic shipwreck beach embraced by two enormous vertical promontories that tower over it and, at the same time, protect it.

Zakynthos is a stunning island. The birthplace of the romantic Ugo Foscolo, it has a dual worldly and wild soul that can satisfy everyone.

Another symbol of the island is the ‘Caretta Caretta’ turtles that lay their eggs on its beaches.

Corfu

The most popular and connected of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is famous for its beaches’ beauty and rich cultural and historical heritage.

The sun, the inevitable ancient ruins, and the traditional taverns where you can dine on fish and stay up late with glasses and chatter are the added value to your boat holiday.

Paxos and Antipaxos are two small islets that offer breathtaking views near Corfu.
